Oceanos

Os Oceanos são vastas extensões de água salgada que cobrem mais de 70% da superfície terrestre. Os oceanos dão-nos alimento, regulam o clima e são responsáveis pela produção de grande parte do oxigénio que respiramos. São ainda parte fundamental da economia mundial, suportando setores como o turismo, a pesca ou o transporte internacional.
Apesar da sua extrema importância, os oceanos estão a ser ameaçados gravemente pela ação humana. Estima-se que anualmente 8 milhões de toneladas de resíduos plásticos acabam no oceano e que mais de metade das águas residuais do mundo são libertadas sem tratamento. A poluição por nutrientes de descargas de esgotos e da agricultura cria as chamadas “zonas mortas” nos oceanos, associadas aos “florescimentos” de algas que consomem o oxigénio da água. As alterações climáticas também contribuem para a destruição de ecossistemas marinhos ao provocar o aumento da temperatura e nível dos mares e a acidificação dos oceanos. Refira-se, ainda, a pesca excessiva, que põe em causa várias espécies da vida marinha – “atualmente, 90% dos stocks de peixe encontram-se completamente explorados ou sobre-explorados.” – Link
É preciso agir rapidamente para mitigar os danos provocados e para proteger a saúde dos oceanos. Temos que mudar hábitos de consumo e de práticas de produção que põem em causa o futuro da qualidade da água dos oceanos e mares, e consequentemente, a vida no planeta. Temos o “dever individual e coletivo de proteger o ambiente marinho e de gerir cuidadosamente os seus recursos. A existência de mares e oceanos seguros, saudáveis e produtivos é essencial para o bem-estar humano, a segurança económica e desenvolvimento sustentável.” Link 1 , Link 2

A Terra é o planeta azul porque está quase toda coberta de água – que são os Oceanos. Sem os oceanos não era possível haver vida na Terra. Os oceanos contribuem para a produção do oxigénio que nos permite respirar, para a alimentação das pessoas e dos animais, para regular o clima na Terra, para o transporte de pessoas e mercadorias.
Apesar de ser tão importante, o oceano está a sofrer várias ameaças. Um dos principais problemas é a poluição: as águas sujas das casas e das indústrias e o lixo que as pessoas e as organizações não tratam de forma adequada vão parar aos oceanos. Esta poluição coloca em risco a vida marinha, matando peixes e outros animais e plantas. Se não pararmos esta poluição, em 2050 teremos mais plástico do que peixes nos oceanos! Outra ameaça à biodiversidade marinha é a sobrepesca, que significa que estamos a pescar mais peixes do que devíamos, não dando tempo para que eles cresçam e se reproduzam. Temos que salvar a vida nos oceanos para salvar a vida na Terra.

• Participa na iniciativa “A Praga dos cotonetes – Vamos pôr os cotonetes no mapa!” da APLM “Vá à praia e na linha da maré verá que existem vários items que o mar deixou na areia, algas, paus, e lixo marinho… vá apanhando e contando todos os cotonetes que encontrar. Use uma garrafa de água vazia (que provavelmente encontrará também nessa linha da maré…) e vá pondo lá dentro… Depois envie-nos um email com o local, a data da recolha, a distância percorrida (em passos, por ex), o número de cotonetes que recolheu.
• Combate as microesferas que poluem o oceano! Ajuda a criar a base de dados portuguesa para identificar os produtos que têm estas substâncias.
