A educação de qualidade é um processo que promove o desenvolvimento cognitivo, físico e social das pessoas, facilitando a sua integração plena na sociedade. Aprender traz benefícios a todos os seres humanos e deve estar acessível a todos ao longo da vida. É a chave para a prosperidade e abre um mundo de oportunidades, permitindo que cada um de nós contribua para uma sociedade desenvolvida e saudável. A Educação transforma as vidas e a sociedade e é um meio para construir a paz, erradicar a pobreza e impulsionar o desenvolvimento sustentável.

Para uma vida digna e para o pleno exercício da cidadania é muito importante que todas as pessoas possam:
• saber ler e escrever, isto é, ser alfabetizadas;
• desenvolver as suas competências, ou seja, as capacidades para resolver determinados problemas ou exercer certas funções;
• aumentar os seus saberes e as informações que conseguem alcançar e compreender.
A educação de qualidade para todas as pessoas é essencial para um desenvolvimento sustentável. Infelizmente, segundo a ONU, 103 milhões de jovens em todo o mundo todo o mundo não estão alfabetizados, dos quais mais de 60% são mulheres.
Em Portugal, a fraca qualificação escolar da população é apontada como um dos principais fatores das desigualdades sociais. Os níveis de escolarização no país estão abaixo da média europeia e têm impacto negativo no acesso das pessoas aos bens e aos serviços, assim como na capacidade de ação coletiva e reivindicação.

A educação permite-nos descobrir tudo o que podemos ser e fazer. Permite-nos escolher o nosso caminho, ter mais poder e liberdade de ação. Através da educação conseguimos conhecer e compreender o mundo que nos rodeia e agir para garantir que todos vivemos num mundo melhor.
Quando não temos acesso à educação ficamos muitas vezes também sem acesso à informação que precisamos para exercermos o nosso papel enquanto cidadãos. As pessoas que não sabem ler nem escrever (analfabetas) têm mais dificuldade em encontrar trabalho e em saber defender os seus direitos. Já pensaste como seria o teu dia a dia se não soubesses ler?
